Should I replace my existing boiler?

Research by leading boiler company Vaillant suggests that a household boiler should last between 10-15 years.

If you can’t remember when your boiler was installed or don’t know the history of the one you’ve inherited when moving into a new property, there are a couple of tell tale signs that it may need to be replaced:

1. Your boiler is taking longer than normal to fire up
2. Your boiler has become noticeably noisy or you began to notice strange smells
3. Your hot water doesn’t stay hot for very long

Our Gas Safe engineers have been installing boilers for clients throughout Bristol and the wider South West for over 14 years. If you’d like to discuss your requirements with our friendly and professional team, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our showroom.

What are the benefits of getting a new boiler?

There are a number of benefits to getting a new boiler installed and truth be told, clients across Bristol come to us to get a replacement boiler for a number of reasons.

Firstly, with the cost of both gas and electricity continuing to rise across the UK, many of our clients are looking for a more energy efficient way of heating their homes. This is not only good for your wallet, but also the environment. A win-win situation.

Secondly, newer boilers are more eco-friendly than older models. Because they use less energy they can help you reduce your carbon footprint.

Finally, new boilers are built with a number of safety features to keep you and your home safe. These include automatic shut-off valves and pressure relief valves.

What are the different types of boiler?

Combi boilers

Combination or ‘combi’ boilers have the heating system housed in one compact unit. They’re one of the most energy efficient ways of heating your home, meaning your bills should be cheaper.

Conventional boilers

Conventional or ‘heat only’ boiler systems include a hot water cylinder and a cold water storage tank. A good option if you’re looking to upgrade an existing conventional boiler.

System boilers

System boilers are another highly effective way of heating your home. With a system boiler system, water is heated and stored in a cylinder.

Biomass boilers

A biomass boiler burns organic material like wood chips or pellets in a combustion chamber to heat water. This can provide hot water to use or heat a home.

Electric boilers

As you might have guessed, an electric boiler uses electricity to provide hot water. With a compact design, they’re a great choice for small houses or apartments.

What boiler is right for my home?

When choosing your new boiler it’s vitally important that you get the right size unit for your property. Too small and the boiler system will struggle to heat your property adequately. Too big and you’ll end up wasting energy and spending more on heating bills than you need to.
We’ve put together some typical house scenarios and included the average number of radiators each property will need and the size of boiler they should go for.

Central heating scenario 1

A property with up to two bedrooms and one bathroom will typically require 10 radiators. In this scenario the recommended output is 24 – 27kW.

Central heating scenario 2

A property with up to three bedrooms and two bathroom will typically require 15 radiators. In this scenario the recommended output is 28 – 34kW.

Central heating scenario 3

A property with over four bedrooms and over three bathrooms will require upwards of 20 radiators. In this scenario the recommended output is 35 – 42kW.

Getting a new boiler installed

The great news is, once you’ve decided you’d like to replace your old boiler, our expert Gas Safe engineers can have your new one installed in less than a day and with minimum fuss.

While every property we work in is different, the process below outlines the typical steps our team takes while installing a new boiler and should give you a good idea of what’s involved.

Removing your old boiler

Our engineers will start by turning off your power and water and removing your old boiler. To help ensure minimal disruption, this is always done in coordination with your home life and work.

Preparing the area

Once the old unit has been removed, our team will prepare the area where your new boiler will live. This includes making any pipework adjustments needed to accommodate the new model.

Installing your new boiler

With the old boiler out of the way and any necessary prep work complete, our team will get to work installing your new boiler, connecting it to your water supply and existing heating system.

Testing your new boiler

Once the new boiler has been installed and connected with your existing power and water systems, your engineer will test that everything is working correctly.

Using your new boiler

With the testing and safety checks complete, it’s time for the handover. At this stage you’ll be given the instructions for your manual and told how to use it.

Ongoing support

To remain valid, most manufacturer warranties require boiler owners to have an annual service completed by a trained installer. We can help with this also.

Financing your new boiler

We understand that getting a new boiler fitted represents a major expense. This is why we offer financing options across the majority of the Ideal, Glow Worm, Vaillant and Worcester Bosch boiler models we supply.
If you’d like to discuss spreading the payment for your new boiler over several years, please either give our team a call on 0800 002 9541 or call into our showroom on Wells Road, Bristol for a friendly chat.

Book an appointment

Step one is to book an appointment with one of our engineers at a time that works best for you. They’ll be able to assess your current boiler and share advice on what they think will be best.

Complimentary quote

We’ll then provide you with a quote for the boiler installation work discussed during our visit. This will include a number of different options so you can see what works best for your budget.

Installation day

If and when you’re happy with the quote and we’ve answered any questions you may have, we’ll arrange a date for our installation team to come and fit your new boiler.
